Online Training for Drinking Water Operators
Near North Laboratories Inc. offer an online training course and materials to assist water system operators and other professionals in meeting the objectives and regulations of the Ontario Safe Drinking Water Act, 2002 (SDWA).
The Microbiological Sampling Course is for water system operators and other professionals, including those who work in the municipal sector, real estate, home inspectors, rural homeowners, landlords (apartment buildings), trailer parks and tourism accommodation providers.
The Microbiological Sampling Course is approved by the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks, this course takes 3 hours to complete and is worth 0.3 CEUs (Continued Education Units).
Microbiological Sampling Course Map
This course is worth 0.3 CEU and is MECP Director approved. The 3-hour online training includes six modules with a quiz to take and pass after each module before proceeding to the next one.
You can take the quiz as many times as you need.
Modules are as follows:
Module 1: Bacteria Fundamentals
This module focuses on the basic characteristics of bacteria and explains how it can enter into and move through water systems. Participants will learn why bacteria can be harmful to those, who drink infected water and how climate change can affect water treatment operations.
Module 2: Professional Conduct and Safety
In this module, participants will learn how to professionally approaches individuals in their private residences to collect water samples and how to do it safely.
Module 3: Collecting Samples Indoors
Participants will learn and apply hands-on the steps to collecting samples indoors for compliance, mortgage or real estate purposes.
Module 4: Collecting Samples Outdoors
This module allows participants to learn and apply hands-on the steps to collecting outdoor samples, for example at a construction site.
Module 5: Inside the Lab
In this module, participants will learn about the types of tests conducted at the laboratory, including Membrane Filtration for Total Coliforms, E. coli, General Bacteria Population, and Heterotrophic Plate Count as well as other types of tests for Coliform and E.coli. They will also get acquainted with the steps to perform the Membrane Filtration test and frequency of testing.
Module 6: Records and Reports
This module is all about understanding and using Standard Operating Procedures and Record Keeping. Participants will learn to apply quality control elements when sampling, understanding and complete Chain of Custody forms as well as adverse notification paperwork.
